Tree Pruning in Townsville
Pruning with a reason for every cut
Every cut is a wound and every leaf removed is photosynthesis lost. Done right, pruning makes a tree safer and stronger. Done wrong, it starts a decline that takes years to show up.

Pruned, not topped
Topping a tree is still the most common thing done to trees in this country and it is close to the worst. You cut the leader off, the tree panics and throws out a mass of weakly attached regrowth, and in three years you have a taller, denser, more dangerous tree than the one you started with. Then you pay to do it again.
We prune to Australian Standard AS 4373, Pruning of Amenity Trees. Cuts go in the right place, at the right size, at the right time of year, and only where there is a reason for them. The tree seals the wound and moves on.
Pruning we do
- Crown thinning: selective removal to let wind through instead of catching it like a sail
- Crown lifting: raising the lower canopy for clearance over driveways, paths and yards
- Crown reduction: bringing a crown back to correct reduction points, never by topping
- Deadwooding: taking out dead and hanging limbs before they come down on their own
- Clearance pruning: off roofs, gutters, solar, fences and boundaries
- Formative pruning: building good structure into young trees early
- Storm preparation: reducing wind load and removing failure points before the season
Cyclone season pruning
The single best time to prune in Townsville is before the wet, not during it. A crown that has been thinned properly lets wind pass through. A crown that has been topped or left dense catches it, and the tree either sheds limbs or comes over at the roots.
Book it early. Everyone rings at once the week a system shows up on the radar, and by then the useful window has closed.
What good pruning looks like afterwards
Honestly, it should look like almost nothing happened. If a tree looks butchered, that is not a style choice, that is damage. You should notice better light, better clearance and a crown that moves in the wind instead of fighting it.

What you get

Australian Standard for pruning amenity trees. It is what a court, an insurer and the tree all expect.
No topping
It creates weak regrowth and long term decline. We will not do it, and we will tell you why.

Wind load reduction works when it is done ahead of the season, not during it.
Chip and clean

Questions
Asked and answered
If yours is not here, ring Anthony. He would rather talk it through than have you guessing.
How often should trees be pruned?
There is no set interval, it depends on the species, the age and what is around it. A young tree benefits from formative pruning every year or two. A mature tree in a good spot might need nothing for years, then a deadwood every few. Pruning on a schedule for its own sake is just damage on a schedule.
Can you cut the branches hanging over my roof?
Yes, that is standard clearance work. We take it back to a correct pruning point so it grows away from the roof rather than shooting straight back at it.
My neighbour's tree hangs over my fence. Can you cut it?
Generally you can prune what overhangs your boundary, back to the boundary line, but there are rules and there are protected species. Talk to us first, because getting this wrong can get expensive and it is a bad way to meet the neighbours.
Will pruning kill my tree?
Bad pruning can, over time. Correct pruning that removes a sensible proportion of live tissue at the right time of year will not. The amount matters, which is why we do not take more than the tree can carry.
