Stump Grinding in Townsville
Grind it out and get your yard back
A stump is a trip hazard, a mower killer, a termite hotel and the reason you cannot lay that slab. Grinding it is the quickest part of the whole job.

How far down we go
How deep we grind depends on what is going on top. Turf needs less than a garden bed, and a garden bed needs less than a slab or a pool. We ask what you are planning before we start, and we grind to suit it rather than to a standard depth that suits us.
- Turfing or levelling: around 200 to 300mm below grade
- Garden beds and replanting: deeper, with more of the lateral roots taken out
- Paving, slabs and structures: full excavation, because a decaying stump under a slab settles and cracks it
Grinding or excavation
Grinding chews the stump into mulch in place. It is fast, clean, and it leaves the deeper root plate to break down naturally underground. It is the right answer for most yards.
Excavation digs the root plate out. It costs more and it makes more mess, and it is the right answer when you are building on the spot, replanting in exactly the same hole, or dealing with a species that will reshoot from what is left.
Tight access
Back yards, side gates, courtyards, between a pool fence and a shed. Narrow access machines fit through a standard gateway, so a stump behind the house is a normal job and not a special one. If a machine genuinely cannot reach, we will tell you at the quote instead of on the day.
What you are left with
A pile of grindings, which we backfill into the hole or cart away, whichever you prefer. Worth knowing: fresh grindings are great as a mulch on paths, but they draw nitrogen out of the soil as they break down, so they are not the best thing to plant straight into. If you are replanting on the spot, we will bring in clean soil.

Questions
Asked and answered
If yours is not here, ring Anthony. He would rather talk it through than have you guessing.
Can you grind a stump if the tree was removed years ago?
Yes. An old stump is usually easier, because the timber has softened. Sometimes it is harder if the ground has hardened around it and the roots are full of dirt and rock, which is rough on the teeth.
Will the stump grow back?
Not once the stump is ground out properly. Some species will send suckers up from the remaining lateral roots, and we will warn you at the quote if yours is one of them and tell you how to deal with it.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, with clean soil brought in. Grindings alone tie up nitrogen as they break down and a new tree will struggle in them. We can dig the grindings out and backfill with soil.
Do you grind stumps only, or just after removals?
Both. Plenty of our grinding is stumps left behind by someone else, or ones that have been sitting in the yard for a decade. Ring with the diameter and access and we can usually price it over the phone.
