Chipping and Mulching in Townsville

Your tree, back on your garden as mulch

The chipper is on the truck. Whatever comes out of your tree can go straight onto your garden beds, or it can leave with us. Most people take the mulch.

Chipped on site, no cartage

Every job we do runs through the chipper as we go. Nothing sits on your lawn waiting for a second trip, and there is no green waste bin overflowing on the verge for a fortnight.

If you want the chip, we blow it straight into a pile or into your beds. If you do not, it goes on the truck and you never see it. There is no extra charge for you to keep it, which makes it the cheapest mulch you will ever get.

Why mulch matters more here than most places

Townsville soil goes from bone dry to saturated and back again. A decent layer of mulch flattens that out. It slows evaporation through the dry, stops the surface baking hard, keeps root zone temperatures down, and cuts the weeding right back. Through the wet, it protects the surface from being belted by heavy rain.

Rule of thumb: 75 to 100mm deep, and keep it back off the trunk. Mulch piled up against a trunk holds moisture on the bark, and that is how you rot the collar of a tree you were trying to help.

What we chip

  • Everything from our own removals and pruning work
  • Green waste piles you have already cut and stacked
  • Storm debris and fallen limbs after a blow
  • Site clears and vegetation management for builders and property managers
  • Ongoing green waste for body corporates and commercial properties

Fresh chip or aged

Fresh chip is fine as a surface mulch on paths and around established trees. Because it draws nitrogen from the soil surface while it breaks down, do not dig it through your beds and do not plant seedlings straight into it. Let it age, or keep it on the surface where it belongs. Ask us on the day and we will tell you what your particular tree makes.

Questions

Asked and answered

If yours is not here, ring Anthony. He would rather talk it through than have you guessing.

Is the mulch free?

If it comes off your own tree, yes. Keeping it on your property saves us a trip to the tip, so there is no reason to charge you for it.

Can you deliver a load of mulch to me?

Sometimes, depending on what we have on the truck and where we are working. Give us a ring and ask, because it is not always available and it depends on the day.

Will you chip a pile I have already cut?

Yes. Stack it butt ends out where we can get the chipper alongside it, keep it clear of soil and rock, and it will go through quickly, which keeps the price down.

How deep should I spread it?

Around 75 to 100mm, and pull it back a hand's width from the trunk. Deeper than that starts to hold water against the surface, and against the trunk it can rot the collar.
